Basic Obedience Classes

2024 Basic Obedience Start Dates:

January 2, March 5, May 7, July 9, September 10

This class is designed for dogs who have never experienced obedience training or have been away from training and need a refresher to begin again. The class is nine weeks long and occurs on Tuesdays from 7:00pm to 8:00pm. It is held multiple times per year (see start dates at right). The first class session does not include your dog. At the first class you’ll discuss equipment and training methods as well as how to prepare for the next week’s class. Upon successful completion of this course you may opt to become an IOTC member.

Reserve your spot in the next scheduled class by coming in for a required visit (without your dog) and pre-registration on any Tuesday at 7:00pm. During the visit you can observe a class, complete an application and submit deposit of $50.00 check or cash. The total class fee is $250.00. Bring vaccination records when you register.

Class and Pet Therapy Descriptions

Congratulations on considering formal training with your dog! Your pet should be an enjoyable companion for each member of the family and training strengthens the bond between handler and dog. Whether your dog is a new member of the family, or a long term family member that could benefit from a renewed interest in obedience skills, the Basic and Advanced courses provide socialization, training and a positive environment to learn. Puppies, older dogs and mixed breeds are all welcome! If your dog competes in AKC Conformation, the Wednesday night Conformation Class provides preparation for the next time you and your dog enter the ring! Please come in for a required visit and pre-registration on any Tuesday at 7:00pm.

Note that IOTC is closed during the month of December.

Advanced Obedience Classes

This class is designed for dogs that have completed Basic Obedience class or can demonstrate those skills learned in Basic. This is an ongoing class that occurs each Tuesday from 8:15pm to 9:15pm and offers an opportunity to practice obedience skills in a group setting. AKC Companion Dog skills are covered in addition to other skills beneficial for trained dogs. Your IOTC membership covers the cost of this class.

Conformation Class

Indianapolis Obedience and Training Club (IOTC) is a member of the American Kennel Club (AKC). Thousands of dogs participate in AKC Conformation competition and this session is a great opportunity to prepare dogs and handlers for the show ring. The class occurs every Wednesday from 7:00pm to 8:00pm and costs $10 per class per handler.

Bring vaccination records and be prepared to complete an application form on your first night.

Pet Therapy

Dogs that demonstrate they can navigate hospital hallways, work in a group with other therapy teams and enjoy meeting Hospital patients & visitors may be invited to join our Thursday night Pet Therapy teams at Community Hospital East. IOTC is proud of our longstanding association with Community Hospital East and has been visiting on Thursday nights for 29+ years.
